city trip to málaga, spain

from may 4th until may 6th 2007 me and chris (christian kaehr) have visited the city of "málaga". malaga is situated in the south of spain in the region called "andalucia". it is a port city that is surrounded by the mountains of the "sierra nevada". the narrow alleys, the old buildings, the sea and the people lend such a special character to that wonderful city.
malaga has survived much history. that can be seen everywhere: in the old town, in the big castle above the city (castillo gibralfaro) and in the huge cathedral (la manquita). read more about its history on
wikipedia.

day one. may 6th 2007.
the flight went from basel airport directly to malaga with easyjet and took about 2.5 hours. we have arrived very early on the airport. from there it was an about 15 minutes bus ride to the center of the city.
once there we searched for accommodation. we have found a very cheap hostal called "costa rica". for only about 15 eur (a night/person) we slept there. the rest of the day we did some first sightseeing. we walked from our hostal up to the castle (castillo "gibralfaro") where the view over the city was amazing. the castle itself is so big, that you need really some hours to see it all (you will find some nice pictures taken from there in the photo gallery). on the way back we stopped on the beach and went into an open air bar there. in the evening we went out to eat tapas and drink some beers in the old town. that's really what you should do, when you're there!
day two. may 7th 2007.
we had the whole day time for shopping and sightseeing. malaga is a little shopping-paradise: so many narrow alleys and in each you will find different shops. it was sometimes adventure enough to find a really good store. but i think there's a shop for everyone. we spent a lot of time with shopping, combined with sightseeing. due to the fact that it was rainy, this was a really good combination.
later on, we have visited the big cathedral (la manquita) in the center of the old town. an huge and amazing building. i have never seen such a big church before! they began to build it in the 1500s and needed almost 3 centuries to finish it. as you can see, it was worth the pain.
in the evening we went out again. we asked where to go out and decided to go to the cinema...it was still raining. the cinema is placed in the train station building. together with the cinema, about 10 or more restaurants and bars are in the same building. so many people were there, that it seemed that the rest of the city was empty. it's a real place to start going out in the evening - most of the people have left the place before midnight. so i think they have moved to other places. in spain - as in south america too - the usual plan is to eat on about 9 or 10pm, going to a bar until midnight and then going to a disco.
day three. may 8th 2007.
we had to leave very early, seeing that we haven't slept so much. it was about 7.30 whe nwe came out. the people were still returning from going out and most of them were drunk...funny. we took a cab back to the airport. once in the plane we had to wait for about 1.5 hours, because someone that has checked-in the luggage did not come aboard. so they had to find the luggage.
malaga on the map
things to see and do
castillo de gibralfaro: the big old castle above the city is really worth to be seen. it's reachable by a nice 20/30 min. walk. the view is amazing. for only 3 euros you can buy an entry to go into the castle and its little museum. the castle itself is mueum enough.
old town: the old town is so big, that it needs a little time to see it all. it's nice to go out there.
la manquita: the huge cathedral is another building that is worth to be seen. even if you have to buy an entry for about 3 euros.
plaza de toros: if you're lucky (and no animal friend), you can go watching a bullfight in the arena.
museo picasso: the famous painter was born in malaga.
the beach: malaga has a nice beach, where people meet during the summer.
